The CCP is happy to welcome alumnus Fr. Patrick Degrieck on his return visit to Rome. Over coffee he shared with us his different roles in safeguarding in Belgium and the many projects underway. Fr. Patrick is the contact point in the Brugge diocese for victims who come with claims of sexual abuse, and he is responsible for follow up, recompense, and mediation with the diocese. The new bishop of Brugge Mons. Lode Aerts, created a commission to study how to handle perpetrator priests in the diocese (when civil law has been fulfilled) and Fr. Patrick is a part of this commission. The Belgian bishop’s conference also has created an inter-diocesan commission for child protection, in the commission Fr. Patrick is a member of the new core group (which is beginning to meet this next week), there he will implement what he has learned through the diploma course. The CCP is grateful for this news from Belgium and wishes Fr. Patrick many blessings on the long road ahead.
